What advantages does AirQuiz offer?

Choice!  You can choose which examination subjects you would like to have access to - in any combination.  Unlimited access for two years costs £3 for each subject (less if you register for the full series).  Take practice examinations as often as you like within that period - there are no 'per examination' charges.  You can register one subject at a time, or just register for the few exams you have left to do.  Its up to you.

Convenience - AirQuiz has been designed to allow you to practise for these examinations online, at a time convenient to you.  You can access AirQuiz through a web browser wherever you can connect to the Internet, which saves you from carrying books around.  If you unexpectedly get a spare hour - log in and practice with AirQuiz!

Flexibility - You can use AirQuiz as often as you want.  If you find a particular area difficult, you can keep taking the examination as many times as you like.  (But see the Tips page too for some advice regarding this!)

Work online or offline - In addition to working online, you can also create an examination in a printer friendly format, and work through it offline.  If you choose this option a marking sheet with the answers is sent to your email address.  This is especially useful for the examinations that require aeronautical charts.

Support for learning - In addition to the formal examination text, AirQuiz also uses colour pictures (often colour photographs) wherever possible, so that you become familiar with the actual signals, symbols, equipment, runway markings etc. used in flying.

Feedback - After each examination, an email is sent to you with your results.  In addition to your overall score, the questions that you got wrong are listed, with the correct answers indicated.  In July 2004, we included a list of "suggested areas for you to study" in your result email, based on an analysis of your responses.  You can use this information as a checklist of the areas you ought to revisit.

Best of all, the AirQuiz database is constantly being updated.  This means that faulty or out of date questions are replaced as soon as they are identified.  You can play an important part in this process - as there is space for you to leave feedback for us at the end of every AirQuiz examination.  The web based format means no disks are required, nor software updates to purchase or install.

How similar are the exams to the real ones?

Very.  They use a similar multiple choice format with four answer options and they have the same number of questions that you would find in a real examination.  One difference is that AirQuiz examinations are not formally timed, meaning that you can work through the whole examination at your own pace.  In July 2005 we added a timer utility, so that you can keep track of how long each examination is taking you to complete.

Are AirQuiz exams really different every time?

Yes, pretty much.  Each AirQuiz examination is drawn at 'pseudorandom' from a database of questions.  This ensures that examinations will always have a similar scope and prevents you getting a raft of questions on one topic.  However, the actual questions selected will vary each time.  There are many more questions in the database than are required to generate an examination.

If you take enough examinations, inevitably you will see questions crop up that you have done before.  This practise and knowledge rehearsal is no bad thing though!  Although, you'd have to practise quite a lot to see them all - there were 2,939 questions in the database last time we counted... !

Who developed AirQuiz?

The development of AirQuiz is thanks to a team of people with some very diverse skills, including:

  • Educational technology specialists in computer based assessment and e-learning
  • Examiners, Instructors and other experienced pilots
  • Aviation companies/organisations such as Lycoming UK and the UK Met Office
  • Newly qualified pilots who recently sat these examinations 'for real'.
(They could remember exactly what it was like to study for these areas!)

  • We'd also like to say a special thanks to the PPL students who helped us test the system and develop the database back in 2003.  The contributions made by Mark, Steve and Jean have been especially valuable - Cheers!

What do people say about AirQuiz?

AirQuiz has been reviewed in the aviation press, but more importantly we have had excellent feedback from the people who use AirQuiz.  Take a look at our Reviews page.
